The Dirty Secret "Fitness Pros" Won't Tell You (Part 3 of 6)

Following is the classification system for NMA activities. The higher an exercise stands in the system, the more demanding it will be on your neuron-muscular system. The higher the NMA, the greater results.

LEVEL ONE: Isolation exercises using variable resistance machines.

Providing the lowest level of NMA stimulation are the single-muscle machines at the gym that have gears, chains, or hydraulics.

Many of the variable resistance machines subtract the gripping action from the exercises and limit contraction of the muscle. They do you a disservice by taking you farther away from the natural environment for exercise. The human body was not designed to be limited by machines or single point of focus muscular activities. We are designed for full-movement, three-dimensional work, and the limited NMA level achieved by variable resistance machines underlines this important fact.

LEVEL TWO: Compound exercise performed with variable resistance machines.

The machine bench press, or machine leg press are examples of this type of exercise.

While we know that compound muscle exercises provide more stimulation that isolation, the variable resistance mechanism of machines limits the possible stimulation and strength gaining potential.
